Route.10

Cape Ashizuri Cycling Route

 Overview

This course covers the southwestern part of Shikoku. There are only a few temples, with each far from another. So biking is an efficient way to get around.

On the first day, head south from JR Nakamura Station to Cape Ashizuri along the Pacific Ocean. You may want to take a break at Oki Beach, where the sand is smooth and comfortable for bare feet. Osaka Aquarium Biological Research Institute of Iburi Center keeps marine animals for Osaka Aquarium. It allows visitors to see whale sharks in the tank. Cape Ashizuri, where to stay for the night, is the southernmost point of Shikoku. A 270-degree seascape seen from the observatory tells you that the earth is round. You may want to arrive early for a stroll around the cape. Fresh seafood is served at the dinner table at the inn.

On the second day, the route leads to Iwamatsu, which faces the Uwa-kai Sea. A short ride along a winding road brings you to a parking lot with an entrance to Ryugu Shrine. Hike the path to a tip of jagged rocks where the god of the sea is enshrined. You would feel the sacred atmosphere. Back on the bike, continue along the scenic coastline via Tosa-shimizu City, Tatsukushi Beach, and Kanaezaki. The road around Kanaezaki has tunnels and ups and downs. After a while, the Uwa-kai Sea will come into view on your left. The sea looks calm and gentle, with aquaculture rafts floating on the water. The inns in Iwamatsu serve specialty dishes.

On the third day, the road goes across inland to Yawatahama. The road of Hanaga Pass after Temple No.42 is narrow. Don’t push too hard and slow down. Unomachi boasts old streets to enjoy the traditional Japanese culture.Tunnel en route is not so steep. There are many places to stop off around the course as well. Please download a map as a reference and enjoy a trip according to your interests. You can buy local specialties at roadside stations, Michi-no-Eki along the way.
