Route.2

Experience Tokushima’s Attraction

 Overview

This course is located in the eastern part of Tokushima Prefecture and has many ups and downs.

The starting point, Katsuura-cho is famous for its Hinamatsuri (Doll Festival), and every year in March, the Doll Culture Exchange Center is decorated with some 30,000 gorgeous dolls, attracting many people.

The two temples, T20, Kakurinji and T21, Tairyu-ji, are located on different mountains, so you will walk up and down the mountain twice, each at an altitude of about 500 meters. In front of Kakurinji, there is a cobblestones path with a sense of history. The path has a nice atmosphere surrounded by trees, but be careful not to slip if the cobblestones are wet. Shashingatake, the inner sanctuary of Tairyu-ji, is the place where Kobo Daishi underwent severe ascetic practices. Although, it is a 1.3km round trip from the ropeway station, it is a spiritual point that you should definitely visit. From here to the lodge at the foot of the mountain is an obscure bush path, so why not take the ropeway down. Most of the mountain paths on the first day is a section of historical value that has been designated as a national historic site.

On the second day, we can save some time by taking a bus and start from Asebi. The first half of the day is mountainous, but not too undulating. Once you reach Kaigaya Pass, the mountain village scenery changes completely and you can see the Pacific Ocean from the observatory. From there, the rias coastline with its intricate bays continues, and we walk through fishing villages and mountain roads alternately. Eventually, Ohama Beach, famous for sea turtles laying eggs, comes into view, then you are in the town of Hiwasa.

On the third day, be sure to wake up early and enjoy Ohama Beach at dawn. After a memorable moment, we will walk along the Senba Sea Cliff. This is a hiking route that traverses a ridge of cliffs facing the Pacific Ocean. Most of the trail is covered with shrubs, but there are occasional views of the ocean that will clear your mind. There are a few rest stops along the way, so you have plenty of time to relax. You may encounter wild animals. Deers and pheasants will not harm you, but be careful not to get too close to the wild boars.
